IPA assessment rationale

El Parque Nacional y Área Natural de Manejo Integrado (PN y ANMI) Amboró se encuentra entre los 5 sitios IPA con mayores atributos botánicos en Bolivia. Esto se refleja en las 76 especies de plantas en riesgo de extinción a nivel global que alberga, de las cuales 63 son endémicas y tres están restringidas a este sitio Amboró. A este número se suman otras 231 especies endémicas que han sido categorizadas como Preocupación Menor, Casi Amenazada o no cuentan con una evaluación formal de UICN. De este total, 95 especies son de rango restringido en su distribución y 11 especies cuentan con una evaluación de riesgo de extinción a nivel nacional. Sumado el total de 293 especies endémicas, el sitio IPA concentra el 11% de la riqueza de especies endémicas de Bolivia. Otro de los atributos botánicos que posee y por el cual se califica como un sitio IPA es la riqueza excepcional de especies de importancia socioeconómica, albergando un total de 879 de plantas útiles, el 27% del total de especies documentadas a nivel nacional, valor que incluye a 31 especies consideradas parientes silvestres de plantas cultivada.

Site description

El Parque Nacional y Área Natural de Manejo Integrado Amboró se encuentra en el departamento de Santa Cruz, abarcando territorio de cinco provincias. El límite del Parque Nacional corresponde a la zona núcleo de este sitio IPA, mientras que el ANMI constituye la zona de amortiguamiento. A este límite del sitio IPA se adicionó una superficie desde Samaipata hasta Comarapa por el alto valor botánico. El Amboró también delimita parte de la frontera departamental con Cochabamba y, en su momento, formó parte de la propuesta del Corredor de Conservación Vilcabamba-Amboró (CCVA), que integraba diversas áreas protegidas de Bolivia y Perú. Sin embargo, esta iniciativa actualmente se encuentra sin continuidad (Sierra 2021). Además de su importancia en términos de biodiversidad y de conservación, el área protegida destaca por sus atractivos turísticos. Entre los más reconocidos se encuentran las cataratas del Jardín de las Delicias, Mataracú, la Laguna Verde, la Cueva de los Vencejos y Murciélagos, el Bosque de los Helechos, la zona de los Volcanes entre otros (SERNAP 2020).

Botanical significance

El sitio IPA posee un alto valor botánico debido a la presencia de numerosas especies endémicas, especies útiles y especies en riesgo de extinción. Esta riqueza, dificulta describir cada especie en detalle o destacar únicamente ciertos grupos. Entre las especies más relevantes se encuentra Ipomoea odontophylla (CR), una hierba restringida a este sitio cuya población ha sido afectada por actividades antrópicas. También destacan árboles como Magnolia boliviana (EN), Myrcia siberiensis (CR), restringida a la zona de Siberia en el límite occidental del parque y Recordia boliviana (VU). Además de estas especies endémicas con categorias de amenaza se encuentran otras de interes, como Salvia oxyphora y Solanum comarapanum, ambas catalogadas como Casi Amenazada (NT). A este número de especies, se suman otras 878 plantas útiles, donde destacan Capsicum caballeroi (VU), Gochnatia boliviana (VU), Nectandra apiculata (CR) y Porcelia steinbachii (VU), siendo especies endémicas y de importancia socioeconómica, que su vez se encuentran amenazadas a nivel global.

Habitat and geology

Fisiográficamente, el sitio Amboró se ubica sobre la Cordillera Oriental, Subandino y la Llanura Chaco Beniana, conformando un mosaico de paisajes que incluyen serranías, colinas, piedemonte, y planicies (MDSyP 2002). Según Ibisch et al. (2003), en este sitio convergen diversas ecorregiones entre ellas el Bosque Tucumano-Boliviano, los Yungas, los Bosques Secos Interandinos y el Sudoeste de la Amazonia. La vegetación predominante corresponde a bosques altimontanos de los Yungas, bosques yungueños montanos, bosques y pinares montanos Boliviano-Tucumano entre otros (Navarro & Ferreira 2011, Navarro 2011). Estos tipos de vegetación se agrupan en tres grandes grupos según la clasificación de la UICN: Bosque húmedo montano, Bosque seco y Matorral de gran altitud subtropical/tropical.

Conservation issues

El Parque Nacional Amboró se ubica en los Andes Tropicales, considerado el hotspot con mayor riqueza y diversidad biológica del planeta (Mittermeier et al. 2004). Asimismo, forma parte del corredor de conservación Amboró-Madidi, reconocido por su elevada biodiversidad y alto grado de endemismo (Andersen et al. 2006). Más recientemente, el Parque Nacional y ANMI Amboró fue designado como Área Clave para la Biodiversidad (KBA 2025). Además de su extraordinario valor biológico y su rol en la conectividad ecológica, este espacio protegido se caracteriza por la importancia de sus afluentes, los cuales abastecen de recursos hídricos a las comunidades circundantes y a la ciudad de Santa Cruz de la Sierra. No obstante, la expansión de la frontera agrícola, principalmente para cultivos de coca, la extracción ilegal de madera, los asentamientos y actividades ilícitas son las principales amenazas hacia los bosques (Fernández & Paredes 2023, UNODC 2025). Esta fuerte presión, sobre todo al territorio del ANMI, se ubica principalmente en el sector, desde Yapacaní y Huaytú hasta el Jardín de las Delicias, así como la zona opuesta, en Siberia, Comarapa y Mairana. La relevancia de esta área protegida y de su designación como IPA radica en su papel esencial para la conservación de la flora y los servicios ecosistémicos. Por ello, resulta indispensable fortalecer los aspectos administrativos y de gestión, además de otorgar el reconocimiento y la valorización que merece como uno de los cinco sitios con mayor riqueza botánica del país.
